Default Transmission Problem?

Hey everyone, I've got a 1984 944 with a couple issues. First, when I let out the clutch in first, second, and sometimes third, there's a somewhat loud thump sound that appears to come from the transaxle. Second, when I let off the throttle above 3000 RPM, there is a loud grinding noise. It continues until the car drops below 2500rpm or i apply any throttle. That one is harder to pinpoint, as it sounds like it's coming from the front end, but I'm not sure what under the hood could be making that noise. Any help is greatly appreciated.
