Question Alternator

My alternator inop light does not come on. The bulb tests okay. Does the alternator inop light come on when the key is turned on but the engine not yet started? I've owned the car for a year and don't remember if this light has ever come on. The alternator seems to function normally. If anyone else has this problem, did you find a solution?

this lamp is connected between the +12v ign on signal and the alternator positive brush. It should illuminate when the ign is on and motor is not running.

The bulb get a 12V supply and the brushes in the alternator are the ground. When you turn the key on the light comes on. When the engine starts the brushes now also have 12V so the light goes out. Two supply voltages with no ground = no light. If there is not a light with the key on and the engine off, the voltage regulator is bad. The regulator is a separate part that also houses the brushes. It can be replaced without removing the alternator. It is on the rear of the alternator and is held in by 2 screws. Hope this helps.
