Post Speakers for the rear, 5x7's work? (sorry, just one more time)

I know abou the redundant posts, but sorry.
I'm looking to find out if any 5x7 speakers are available that just screw right in place of the stock 4x6's in the rear? Has anyone done this?

Okay, this IS an old subject but while we're at it, I thought someone said that 6-1/2" rounds can be made to screw right into the stock rear locations. Is this correct or not? I know others have said that deeper 4x6's will fit in back than in front. Again, true?

If my memory serves correctly (you can always check the 944 FAQ and follow the link to stereos) the '87 & newer cars can accept 6 1/2" if you remove some plate in there. I have an '83 so can't verify.

Depth isn't really a problem with the rear speakers...unless you are really hacking up the metal and trying to fit a huge speaker in there.

Also, if you want to take care of the mounting depth problem with the front speakers, Porsche sells another set of front speaker grills. They were from the high-end stereos in '87 & later, I believe. Anyway, you get about 2" mounting depth (again, all in the FAQ). I put in a nice pair of Boston Acoustics 4x6 in the doors using these speaker grills. These grills are pretty cool because they are stock and they look better than the waffle grills.

I'd be very interested in knowing the part-numbers for those optional speaker grilles.

Well I just put a new set of 6.5s in the rear of my car and they fit with very minor mods. I only had to drill new holes to mount them and they were 3in deep. The deal with my car -'89 model year- was there is a cut out that allows either 6.5s or 4x6s to be installed at the factory. This is accomplished by an overlapping cutout and an adapter plate. The whole area is cut out and the 6.5 area is a removable plate that comes out with the 4x6. Think of a football sitting over the letter P of a stop sign. To remove take out 2 Screws on the right side of the 4x6 and three screws on the LR, LL, and TR corners of the plate. When installing the new Blau Overdrive (odx663 - great deal BTW) I was only able to put in 3 screws due to the cut out. I'm not positive but I think 5x7 may be made to fit, on this car anyway.

For the panel I carefully pulled vinyl from under the seal with the windows in the car and it took me about 1.5-2 hrs total per side. If you don't pull the windows the key is to have warm temps and patience. A tool I made really helped me. It was a very small plastic ladle from the kitchen although any smooth and rigid plastic would do (toothbrush?). I melted it and shaped the handle (about the dia of a #2 pencil) into a 1-2cm J-shaped hook on the end and this allowed me to lift under the lip of the seal and relativly easily slide the vinyl back under. The vinyl was hardly glued to the metal part around most of the window, the tricky part was where it was glued vinyl to the vinyl on the headliner at the uppermost part and on the vinyl of the B-pillar closest to the door. Again just go slow and use your finger and fingernail to peel vinyl from vinyl. I managed to only tear a tiny but of the vinyl and it was close enough to the edge that it was easily tucked under the seal. Hope this helps any future stereo freaks.

Someone said 6x8" ones would work, but not 6x9". So, I bet 5x7" would fit.

I had posted awhile back that I had MEASURED for 6x9's, and found that it looked a little too close, BUT, the 6x8 would fit w/in the boundaries. I did not actually try to make it work though, as it would definately involve removing the windows (or trim- mine wont come out separately- I've tried) and then cutting some metal. My car is a Turbo S and has the 6 1/2's back there. Unfortunately, they are square edged, like a 4x6- this makes it a bitch to fit regular 6 1/2's in there. I had to have an adapter plate made...

Not sure about 5x7'x- there's definately room, but I'm not sure how much trouble it would be- it would probably involve at least a little cutting...
