How do i tell if my engine mounts are bad ?
Hi all,
As subject really. 85 944 NA . Most noticabley when going up an incline onto my drive the (bit tricky to describe) engine makes / car feels stuttery as if somethings loose . Only happens when i pull away from rest. Kinda ruled out clutch so any ideas what can i test for ??
cheers
Phil

Here's information I gleaned from the workshop manual as symptoms of a bad engine mount:
- The right mount is more likely to fail first, due to heat from the the proximity of the exhaust.
- Knocking or vibration while starting and/or turning off the engine.
- Severe engine vibration at idle.
- Not enough spring travel when pulling down on the engine. 2 - 3mm is expected. Also it says to not check the two mounts together and use the exhaust pipes for leverage (I interpret this to mean that you should rock the engine, not try to press down on the center)
- Fliud leaking from the mounts, any cracks or damage to the rubber sandwiched in the mount.
- A height of less than 60 mm measured between the bearing surfaces of an installed mount.
What you might be experiencing though is play in the clutch disk. I believe that as the clutch ages, the springs in the disk that buffer engagement may weaken and make the clutch more likely to cause a kind of surging feeling under varying load. I notice this in my 944, sometimes in a first to second gear shift. Another possibility from what I've read is that the rubber hub in the clutch can wear and also cause engagement problems that may feel like the engine is not pulling smoothly. 'Hope this helps.

Why rule out the clutch? This sounds exactly like a clutch engagement problem. Maybe some air in the hydraulics, slave not engaging fully, or the clutch itself.
Does it happen all the time, or just when hot/cold?

Benton944 cheers for the detailed reply. I shall check those out although from what you describe i reckon its more likely clutch than mount. The cars very smooth at idle etc
Skip well i kinda ruled out the clutch cos i took it to a very well respected 944 specialist and he took it for a drive and said its ok for now. Then a few days back i was driving up er my drive and the car just felt loose on the left hand side so i thought maybe left side engine mount ?! The air in the hydraulics etc you described as something to look at could you point me towards a tech doc or should i just look in the haynes manual.
Thanks for both your replies
