Question To test pipe or not...

Does anyone know whats the difference, if any, between installing a test pipe and just gutting the cat? I have heard that they serve the same purpose and that gutting the cat saves bucks over purchasing a test pipe. Also, I have been told that a test pipe is shaped differently or curved differently and works much better than a gutted cat and that gutting a cat messes with the electronics somehow.
Any suggestions or comments?

Thanks much,

Steve (1989 944na)
