Post More OOOMPH for 944 na

I have a normally aspirated 944, and was wondering what the current wisdom is concerning adding a little more oomph to the performance. My current research indicates that for performance, you should really just sell the 944 na go out and buy a 944 turbo, because aftermarket superchargers and turbos are not particularly cost effective. Any views on this??
Thanks

Your research is correct. You will be lucky to get 10HP increase after spending large amounts of money. If you want more power and performance you really have to invest in a 944T,

Autoathority offers 14hp at the rear wheels by using their chip in a 944 n/a. I have one on order based on all of the positive feedback I have seen relating to this product. I can tell you that the impact on a chip on my last bmw was great so I am looking forward to this cheap addition. $290 from windward performance. (read the warning about them before buying, it was posted after my chip was shipped so there wasn't much that I could do about it)

Go to the "924/944/951/968" section of this forum (right under "Water Cooled" and read this thread: "hey 944na owners interested in superchargers, read this". Sounds real promising to me.

I do not think that you can get a Turbo that is in good shape for the price of your car plus the expected price of this supercharger.

yeah, I started the supercharging thread. The project has received a green light, and it will start once there is a test car that is willing to go to Austin. It will be a very reasonably priced kit, 3-4k, and the hp/torque that you will get out of that price are a way better deal than going for a bunch of little mods.

Good luck, I'm in the same boat as you.

anyone tried swapping out the headers for some added power. Seems to be a relatively cheap mod with pretty good hp gain claims. Any experience?

I am having new headers, msd 6a ignition, blaster 2 coil, nology hot wires, and dme upgrade installed along with my auto to manual tranny conversion. I wont be able to tell you if there is a difference from the headers alone, cause I am doing this all at once, but I will be able to tell you how it sounds. Next comes the aluminum interior and supercharger.

Depending on the year, the N.A. chip adds minimal seat of pants feel. It is hardly worth the $250 IMHO, but it works pretty well. Honestly, I could hardly tell the difference. One trick might be to use Sunoco Ultra 94 to get the most out of remapping. Oxygenated gas also affects the chip remap.

I had an 86 N.A. that was MARGINALLY quicker with the Autothority chip. You also risk trashing your DMA box if you are not careful installing it...static, bent connections, etc. Just be careful when you pop it open. The connector at the front of the card can be hard to pop out, and you can also break the little "feet" that hold the two cards together. The Autothority instructions are pretty unclear as to how to actually pop the boards out of the case once you open it by bending the tabs. Actually, there are some instructions at http://944-world.com/dme.html, and a video at http://www.grmotorsports.com/proj944.html

Actually, a $30 "thottle cam" made the car much more responsive off of the line. The cam makes the throttle more linear -- the emissions profile required a "cam" on the air meter box that opened the throttle about 25% for the first 50% of gas pedal travel.

I agree with the notion that a turbo (or S2) is the way to go. My S2 is WAY faster than my 86 N.A. was.
