Here's my rear bumper. All molded to the body. Steel bar inside the fiberglass bumper, then fireproof expanding foam to fill it all in. If it gets hit back there....... ?? But then again, I really like the look of the smooth rear end.

Its been years since I read about this but as I recall , one reason for the 5-mph US bumper law was to make automakers provide consumers with protection in low impact collisions. The bumpers were to allow a 5 mph impact with NO damage. Hence, the shock absorbers. This was probably lobbied by US insurance companies to cut down on payouts for small repairs.

In higher speed impacts, damage is similar going from US spec to Euro. 944's tend to grow larger fender bulges in these impacts from everything getting pushed in, which pretty much total the car.

So, bottom line, Euro spec bumpers will provide less protection in low speed impacts (5 mph or so) which will be more likely to cause some damage. A US spec should take a 5 mph impact with no real damage.
