Post Factory Repair Manuals Worth It?

If have been slowly rebuilding the engine to my '83 944 and am looking at the Porsche Factory Repair Manuals offered from Automotion and Tweeks for around $300. Those of you who have used these manuals, are they worth the $, and if so, have you seen them for cheaper?

For some things they are great. I have only seen them for slightly less (e-bay). the bids get crazy. The wiring diagrams arent wonderful but are OK.

If you can part with the scratch, do it. I have a couple random books but not a complete set. I allways seem to put the 300$ toward something else each time I was about to take the plunge.

Good luck with the motor.

Paragon Products has the 944 set for $225. I think that they are worth it.

They are much more detailed than the Haynes manual, but... I've gone to look up 3 things since I got mine and come up empty each time. In other words, they aren't a magic bullet. I feel pretty confident that I can get any question answered with the manuals AND this message board, the people here are terrific.

YMMV

What Thad and Tabor have said is consistent with everything I have heard and seen myself. Everyone here has the same interest even when we get OT a bit.

Sometimes you want to re-write the manuals and/or smack the author up side the head.
But what can you do?

I bought the fiche for something like $50 for both the 944 and the turbo supplement. Then, I bought a reader off ebay for about $10. Works fairly well, but rough handling will damage them fairly quick.

I also bought the parts fiche, but it became difficult to read, so yesterday I bought the parts manual. This is much better and includes the technical service bulletins.

Got my manuals on CD, somebody copied the 944 manuals (all of them and the turbo too) to PDF files and sells them on e-bay from time to time for 20 bucks.

I have to agree with Thaddeus. At times you will be confused by the stuff Porsche decided to put in the workshop manual.
