Question 944 diy work

I bought a pair of oil seals for the balance shaftes on a 944 NA 1986 115k. I asked the shop to send me any related gaskets, I'd need. They sent me 2 bushes made of metal, at a cost of some £25.00 each. Thesse bushes sit on the end of the shafts for the seals to run on. Is it normal for these bushes to be repaced at the same time as oil seals? I don't think so.

I'm also going to replace the valve stem oil seals, as the car is burning some oil. Can these be changed without removing the head? I've done this on a few cars, but wasn't sure about the Porsche. Haynes doesn't help.

Any advive would be really useful - cheers

I believe the metal bushes need to be replaced at the time of oil seals (can tell you for sure if you provide part #s).

Also, I don't think the valve seals can be done without pulling the head, but if you're changing balancer shaft seals, the belts are coming off, the head's not too hard to remove once the belts are off, and the cam assy. is out.

Hope this helps.

Wink

Ahmet,

Part no's are
seals 999.113.281.40 & 999.113.282.40
bushes 928.105.139.02 x2.

Just thought if I didn't need to disturb the head with extra time, gaskets etc... But it'll be interesting.

Thanks for the advice

Colin

I replaced my valve stem seals without pulling the head. The big trick is getting a valve spring compressor that will work on our cars.

Hint: If you stuff rags in the oil passages in your head, you can't drop valve keepers down them!

Part #928.105.139.02 stands for a spacer, thad does NOT need to be replaced. 999.113.281.40 & 999.113.282.40 (seals)ARE correct #s, and they do need to be replaced, you need one of each. You also need part # 944 101 125 02(polyester seal), 944 105 321 00 (o-ring), 999 701 652 40 (another o-ring). There's also another minor seal that I think should be replaced on the bearing bridge (that holds the balance shaft bearing in, on the rear of the engine), but the part is NOT mentioned in any part # databases I could look into. The parts around the balancer shafts are quite complex, I wouldn't doubt a dealer could mess them up, you could call another dealer, or an external parts supplier to be sure.

About the seals, if you don't pull the head (and listen to Tabor about it, I have not pulled a head yet), watch for the lifters, if they come out make sure you mark what spot they came from...

Let me know if this helped, and good luck.

Tabor, thanks for the hint, I'll use plenty of rags!
Ahmet,
Thanks for checking the numbers out, I'v elooked them up on a site I found which shows a breakdown. http://gene.wins.uva.nl/~marcol/tech...4/bshaft.html.
I'll ring the dealer to find ot why they sent these spacers, and not the other seals you mentioned, let you know what happens. I might start the work this weekend, at least strip and find out if I need any more parts.

Cheers Colin
