Post R12 replacement

Hi guys,
Just wanted to know if anyone has heard about the "new" freon that came out that is ozone friendly, and fits in any old R12 system? It's called R414b, and supposively can be used as a drop in replacement for R12.
Has anyone tried it?
Saw the article in a local newspaper, but there is no quote on price, or who stocks it.
When I find some, I'll let you guys know!
Later

Hi Mike:

R4`4b a.k.a. "Hotshot" is a blend of four refrigerants. It is 50% R22, which is used in home AC units, 39% R124, 1.5% R600 and 9.5% R142b. It has been around for awhile; nothing new.I have never used it, don't advise it. Here's why in a nutshell. All refrigerants have different molecule sizes and escape from the system at different rates. Therefore a blend which starts out for example as 50% something and 50% something else over time may become 40% something and 60% something else due to leakage, and that ratio may have totally different characteristics. No blend over time maintains the originel proportions. I recommend either changing over to R134a or biting the bullet and paying the big bucks to fix the source of any leaks and top off the R12.

Just the opinion of an old A/C tech.....

Cheers!!

Actually I know a few refrid. people who converted their cars to r414B. Going to 134a requires you remove ALL of the r12.. In other words blow nitrogen through the system for 1 day. 134a has different lub. properties then does r12.. So they mix like oil and water.. This will eventually build a sludge (looks like mud) and can lock up your compressor or clog things.. I am going to use 414b when I refill my AC...

The oils not mixing was with the first systems out. The newer systems oil is compatible with the old oil that ends up in the system. I've done my 951 last week and it was pretty impressive for the 34 bucks I spent. I'm going to get a new dryer and do it again. I've had 134 in my truck for two years now and it's been fine.

To CBR2:

Who told you that nitrogen has to be pumped through the system on a refrigerant change?

If the system is thoroughly evacuated and will hold a vacuum for a minimum of an hour, sealant can be introduced, the proper oil can be installed and the R134a can be put in.

Like I said in one of the responses above, R414 is a blend. It may have initial properties that will work with R12, but that can change over time.

Mike: There are a number of sites with info. Just key on (believe it or not) R414b. You will be surprised. One word of warning> Beware sites selling the stuff. The info will not be objective.

Just tryin' to help
