Post Speedo anti tamper

Last night I pulled my speedo trim & vent panel to clean and thought I would check my gauge cluster bulbs, I did'nt remove the cluster but did move it around andpull on it to look behind and apparently tripped an anti tamper device, quoting dealer. [something the color and texture of masking tape] popped up to cover the middle 4 digits on the odometer.I've been told local speedo shop can fix no problem. Anyone else ever experience this? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

That was on the 87 944S that I bought with a blown engine, it was like that when I bought it. I'd be curious as to what it is also. I'm parting the car so it doesn't matter, just want to know!
