On my 1989 944 S2 Cab, the speedometer works eratically. At times it is fine, other times it is bouncing up and down like a yo-yo. There are also a couple of occassion where it does not register at all. Something is beginning to break....Can anyone help me as to where and what to look for??
TIA

There is a nylon gear in the speedo that works off of the worm gear on the motor on the back of the speedo, the gear get's fradgile over the years and teeth break off of it. This happened to mine also, VDO dealers will not sell only the gear you have to send the whole insturment unit to be repaired to the tune of around 100 bucks. If the gears teeth are good it still could be bad as they also strip out in the center of the gear.

ssorge:
This gear only affects odometer function. It cannot mess up the actual speedo needle. I would look into the cost of replacing the sender in the tranny(or S2s m ight use an ABS sensor for speed, not sure). If it is cheap enough, I would buy that first, replace it, and see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't work, I am not sure where to start. Maybe trying to borrow an instrument cluster to see if it is an electric brain problem in teh gauge itself.
Good luck,
Dave
