Default 944 spark problem

I have an 87 944 with an intermittent spark prob will start and run fine go into the store and no spark. Have replaced the dme relay. Here is the odd thing that no one can figure out if I take a piece of wire and hook to green coil wire and touch it to the neg batt terminal with key on and then try to start car it starts every time. Any help would be appreciated thanks
