Question M030 Suspension, BigReds, etc...

What exactly does the M030 package consist of? What parts differ from a standard suspension/brakes etc... Should I look for a M030 Suspension package or is there a better and cheaper route? I've heard big reds are better than the M030 breaks pluss cheaper to get and maintain. Someone help clear me up on this one.

Thanks

If you want to bolt big-reds (or big blacks) on you will need the M030 hub/spindle assembly. FWIW, you may only need the spindles, I don't know.

At that point you can install the Paragon Products adjustable ride height kit on your existing struts (or upgrade, if you don't have Koni's yet).

The sky is the limit from here:
  • Camber Plates
  • Solid bushings
  • Sway Bars
  • etc.

Dear Roberto,
You might want to reconsider when you see how much this lot is going to cost you. You will need new wheels as well. I think you will find the cost is about the same as your 944 is worth. Big Reds do not just bolt on.
I would certainly look at suspension mods. Plenty of aftermarket versions to choose from but I do not see the need for Big Reds (genuine ones that is) on a 944.
However it is your money,
Ciao,

PS: Genuine Big Reds are for stopping the Turbo boys of 320 to 450 plus HP.

Bob, AFAIK, M030 was adjustable height spring perch on the front struts, which were also stiffer (spring & strut); bigger sway bars; not sure about rear, but certainly stiffer shocks; bigger brakes (basic four-piston caliper?).

All this mis-info should get one of the experts to chime in with the correct data...

If you've got the single-piston sliding-frame brake calipers, consider the black four-pot calipers from the early base Turbo, S2, & 968. Cheaper than Big Reds, but may require 16' wheels (?). With the right pads, these should work fine, unles you're also going to add a supercharger...

Jim, then you'll want the optional spring-loaded anchor mounted in the rear hatch....

Roberto,
In order to put Big Reds on your car all you need to do is change over to standard 944 Turbo or S2 stuts, hub and spindles. Plenty of them out there that have been wrecked. Once you have those assemblies the Big Reds ARE just a bolt on (using an adapter and the correct rotors of course). If you want to see what some of your options are check out this website www.944S2.com and go click on "Suspension". Tom Pultz does a very good job of discussing his thought process wrt suspension upgrades. His mods weren't cheap but I think they were/are probably the best way to go if you want M030 or better handling for the street. M030 suspensions (complete) are hard to find.

***And a little note to every else, notice the "S3" behind his model designation...he has done a 968 engine transplant, that's why he wants to upgrade his brakes. His car is much faster than a stock 1988 944***

Good luck Roberto, check out Tom's site, it will help.

Best Regards,
Max

Adrian, the main advantage to big reds (or big blacks) is that they cost less than the 928S4 brakes that came with the M030 option. Also, they bolt onto the M030 spindles.

Thanks for the info guys. I allready have 16's and the Turbo/S2/968 style brake & suspension work done. Jim your on the money about my future ideas, SC or turbo. This is why I want more stopping power, and IMO you can never have to much handeling and road hugging capability. You know you love the road, give it a hug. I'm just day dreaming with the forced induction stuff for the most part.

So what was the option code & part numbers for the spring loaded anchor?... Oops, was there someone tailgating?...

Bob, I _think_ the option code for the spring-loaded rear anchor is something like M-0h-s*#t!, but I could be wrong.... I've read that the weight penalty consists of the anchor and the launching spring, but mostly the chain & the rewinding windlass....

Actually, I kinda like the U-boat & snowplow options (see www.968.net). But I'm not sure that they're retro-fittable to a 944 body, even with a 968 soul. Probably have to do some cutting & welding.

Jim, hopin' someone takes this stuff seriously...

Cool

Jim,

Because of the hatch seal problems in the 944/etc line, I think I remember that the U202 option would also require the fathom grade hatch: #M0RC-LANT, or with wiper: #M0RB-UBLS. And for some reason I also remember that the car could not be U202 equiped if it was "Normally Aspirated". Turbo guys have all the luck.
