Post Starter motor lubrication

Hello,

I've heard that taking apart your starter motor and lubricating certain internal parts can greatly extend it's life. It also helps to prevents it from jamming. Does anyone have a write up or website on how to do it? Have a good one.

Thanks,

Oh man did I have a bad experience with this. I've heard the same thing, and when the starter on my quattro (basically the same Bosch starter as Porsche uses) started to make a bit of noise when I started the car, I though I'd take it apart and lube the gears. Well, I took it apart and the gears just crumbled out in a pile of fragments. The only thing holding them together was the case of the starter. I got to enjoy push starting my car to get home from my friend's and to get around for the next week. Learned how to spot parking spots that face downhill. Ah the fun we had when we were kids.

Anyway, if your starter's making noise, just replace it. If it's not and you open it up and find the gears in one piece, you can lube them with something like a Wurth HHS 2000 flowable grease or something else lightweight. Personally, I think it's thermal cycles and age that kill the internals.

Good luck

Bryan
