Not to belabour the point too much, but it does not appear that the Suburbans owned by my sister and her brother-in-law are the exceptions, but rather the norm. When my sister had to have the trans replaced the Chevy dealer told her that they were surprised that it actually lasted as long as it did (under 30K miles). Apparently her brother-in-law was told something similar the first time he had his tranny replaced. And we aren't talking minor transmission noise, the trans failed catastrophically all three times. Limp home mode at best.

When it happened to my sister she was on the freeway in the middle of an NE Ohio winter with her 5 year old daughter in the truck and my sister was pregnant.

funny,

I would estimate almost half of everyone I know here in town has or has had a suburban (you know, everything big in Texas). I have not heard of anyone needing a new tranny at less than 100k miles. Altho, maybe its a 4wd 2wd thing, as most all here in texas are 2wd.

Dont know the age of the ones that had tranny probs, but I hear the older versions (pre-90's) were a lot worse

I've been happy as a clam with my '99 Sub LT, and am about to trade it in for a new 2002. Oil in one end, gas in the other, thats ALL for 3 yrs. Even the 1/2 ton version tows my trailer (5k lbs loaded) with ease. I would recommend one highly! SOOOO comfortable on long trips.

txhdge,

I agree with you on the Suburban's reliability. Prior to the Yukons which my mother now has, she started with a Suburban in '83--190,000 miles later, it is still going strong(it is now regulated mainly to hunting duty), but my brother just drove it to Maine and back. The reliability of that Suburban convinced my parents(and sister) to switch from Jeeps to GMCs(suburban/Yukon). This was after buying Wagoneers since 1968. All are 4x4s and none have had any tranny problems.

I know someone who had thier Suburban tranny fail within the first 1,000 miles of ownership. But her car only has like, 10,000 miles on it right now, so I can't say how it will turn out in the long run.

On a similar note, my Girlfiends Father has a ~1988 suburban that has done fine.
