Default Just got my '83 944 running, timing belt next

Hey folks,
Just bought a non-running 83 944 over the holidays and just got it running this week. I am now looking to do the timing and balance shaft belts and will probably do the water pump while I am at it. I would like to get opinions on this kit:
http://www.autoatlanta.com/Porsche-C...B94423742.html

Please let me know if there are alternatives to this kit that would be better.
I haven't noticed any water or oil leaks and I have been driving the car to work all week.

Speedometer/odometer on this car is not working yet and mileage is unknown(indicates like 39K miles)

Are there any other items I should be looking at doing?

I wouldn't buy anything from Auto Atlanta. Do a search on them...

I found that you can build your own kit at zims for a pretty good price. www.allzim.com

944online has a kit as does ecs tuning. Ecs has had a few negative things said about the kit, and they are kind of pricey.

Oh, and I would also look into doing the fuel lines ASAP. www.rennbay.com

IMHO, if it isn't leaking oil, it may start soon. Was the car sitting for a long time? I'm on my third 944 and since you'll have the front apart, it's a perfect time to replace cam, balance shaft and crankshaft front seals. They're cheap and there's a lot of links on how to do them right. When one starts to leak, keep in mind that they're all the same age and it's just a matter of time before they start to leak as well.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll be ordering a kit soon and probably not from autoatlanta. Found a kit on 944online that includes a water pump and all the front seals. I'll probably get a tool kit as well that includes the flywheel lock, tension tool, thin tensioner wrench and the pinned wrench.

I just did mine with only two tools from Arnnworx. I didn't see the need for any of the other tools.

Tension tool - http://www.arnnworx.com/catalog/inde...7d5b8200394120

Thin wrench - http://www.arnnworx.com/catalog/inde...7d5b8200394120

I got my t-belt and waterpump components from board sponsor ECS Tuning. Quality parts, not a terrible price.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Turb-OH Brad, without the pin wrench, how do you remove the balance shaft cogs?
Also, how do you lock the flywheel?

Answers... Maybe not the right answers...

I used vice-grip pliers to hold the cog in place while turning the nut. Didn't do any damage to the cog, and all is well.

You shouldn't need to lock the flywheel if you have an impact gun to remove the crank bolt. Alternatively, you could section the rear timing cover to gain access to the water pump bolts.

Plenty of ways around it.
