Early 924 woes

Early 924 woes
I am hopeing that this is a common problem and perhaps someone could help me...
I have a 1978 924 that has been a wonderful car, until recently. It started running very rich, slow getting worse until the point that it is now- it wont even fire.
I noticed a pool of fuel on top of the intake under the throttle body- to investigate it further I removed the rubber boot which connects the throttle body to the fuel distributor only to find it partially full of liquid fuel! it spilled out all over the (thankfully cold) engine, leaving me befuddled and one gallon of gas poorer.
I don't see how this is possible because the fuel is injected at the cylinders, not through the rubber air intake. Is this the mark of a failed fuel distributor???

Could be your Cold Start valve is sticking open, perhaps? I recommend you go through the diagnostics of the FI system in the Haynes manual to be completely sure, but a quick check could be to remove the CS valve from the intake manifold and see if it continues to spray fuel after the engine's running. Of course, it could just as easily be that the Thermo-Time Switch, which controls the CS valve, is dead. This can be verified to be the case if the CS valve is getting a continuous +12VDC across the terminals after engine startup. It could also continue to spray fuel if it's physically clogged.
Have you run any FI cleaner through it recently? This is a perfect example why you should put in at least 1 or 2 bottles a year, and drive the car hard on good gas.
