I am curious too...I have a set of '83 pistons, rods, and crank with a build date in '82. How can I identify these as forged?]

EDIT: The rods i have are part number 944.103.101.3 RARST and turns out the are forged. Does anyone know how to tell it the crank is forged? Were any of these parts not forged for other years?

Anyone need a set of forged rods for cheap?

On my last build I had SwainTech do my piston coatings. I used TBC for the top of the piston and PC-9 for the skirt on the advise if Richard at Swain. The coatings will not cover scoring though, it follows the contour of what is being coated and doesn't act like a filler.

Also just an FYI, the KS and Meyle pistons are the same spec but use different piston pins. The lengths are different.

Van,
If the crankshaft you have is cross-drilled for each connecting rod journal, then I believe you could have issues with #2 bearing spinning because it is the same situation with no cross-drilling in another crank which has one hole per connecting rod journal. The issue is more oil flows to #1 than to # 2 with just one hole per journal and thus the cross drill of #2 and #3 increase the oil flow while #1 and #4 have a single hole. If all the connecting rod journals are cross-drilled, then logic might follow that more oil will flow to #1 than to #2 because each has two holes. Maybe others would like to way in on it and whether one hole in #1 and #4 should be plugged????

I understand that coating won't remove the scoring. I was thinking of lightly sanding the scored area before i sent it to them. Before I do that, I will contact Swain and see what they have to say.

Good move, Swain are very helpful and understand coatings for Alusil bores.

If you sand the scoring down they will probably advise you to double coat the skirts (twice the thickness) then sand the coating back to get the correct piston/bore clearance. Speak to Richard, he normally answers the phone anyway. GL
