Is Safelite capable of replacing a windshield?
So long story short, I cracked my dad's windshield when replacing hood struts. Haven't bothered with replacing it for over a year now but I think it's about time that I do.
Option 1
My question is will Safelite be capable of replacing it? And I assume that the glass will not be sekurit, so will aftermarket be okay? From what I have read, it sounds like the seals come preinstalled on the sekurit glass so will Safelite have a suitable seal?
Option 2
I guess the other way to go would be to buy sekurit glass from Porsche ($600) and have Safelite install it. The reason I might want to go with Porsche glass is because my dad is the original owner of his car, 86 951 special ordered and built in 85, its totally OEM, LSD, Sport seats, Original paint, and the car is immaculate. Do you think people would care if it has Porsche glass or not?
On a side note, my car's (different car) rear hatch glass has now separated. I viewed some of the other threads on this but I don't feel like I have the resources to tackle resealing it to the frame. Now don't hurt me for this but... can I just fill in the gap with some sort of... goop? I'm 15 and don't care about everything being so perfect on my 951 but my dad's 951 is another story.
Thanks for all your input,
Christian

Safelite will order the w/shield for you and they may have it in stock. You do not want an 82 -85.2 early w/shield. The early have some Chinese made that the glass is wavy, plus it will be too short and require more filler sealing. Sekurit is the w/shield you want them to install with the radio antenna inside it. If they come up with a tinted w/shield your money ahead.

Safelight did mine as well. Mine's a 86 with the antenna. They did a really good job, and the glass was sekurit. They told me the glass with the antenna was Sekurit, and the one without was a different brand. No idea on the cost, as mine was free through insurance.

Thanks for all of the fast replies! I guess I will be calling them and see if they have a sekurit for me. And I guess I'll just do a little more reading about the hatch glass.

i work in the warehouse for safelite and am actually in there now.
i just looked and the one we have in stock is sekurit, late with antenna.
the part number is fw603 ggyp. the p meaning premium. for the most part it means its an oem without a logo.
and ive known of a few that we have replaced, all with good results.
when its a nicer car (or the brand scares them like porsche, bmw, merc, ect..) they tend to put a more experienced guy on the job.
hope that helps

Agree. They were lowest bid and completely happy with the results. I might have gotten lucky with an experienced installer, but the glass seems like original and the antenna is in the windshield.

The worst one I had was one of those installers that comes to your house - he tore the dash pad vinyl and tried to glue/cover it up. This was on a two year old Honda - I thought it was odd that he didn't even come to the door after the job was done. The insurance did finally pay for a fix though.
I had a 951 glass done a couple of years ago and I just checked, it is marked as Saint Gobaine Securit. The only minor complaint I have was the rubber seal is trimmed short on one side and hanging long on the other. Minor but visible if you're looking. I think it was about $550....Bruce

I've had 4 windshields installed in my car (not including the original).
