Post Tranny swap?

I'm thinking about swapping the tranny from my 86 turbo to the 84 NA as I can't get the turbo to run right, and the 84 has a broken pinion gear. Has anybody done this?

Would this be a straight forward swap, I know the shift linkage should be alright and ditto for the tranny mounts, but how'bout the CV joints? I don't have a car to drive at the moment...

I'm not sure but I think its a straight swap. I do know that the turbo gears area bit too tall for the n/a though. I think it would be way easier if you just rented a car untill you fix either of the 44s. I say track the 951 or use it as a weekend car and use the n/a for a daily driver.

I would reccommend an S2 transaxle over an na unit.

Turbo gearing is quite a bit steeper, but I beleive it will bolt right up. Hopefully, this is a temporary measure until you get the 951 running correctly and a correct trans for the 944.

I dont think the 84' na tranny would last that lond with that kind of torque spinning it.

The n/a car with a turbo tranny will work but like said it is just a bit too high to 'feel' effective. if it is just to get you around then this will work. Now if you put an N/A tranny in the turbo that is tons of fun!!! I have over 10k on my 'Temporary' transmission (n/a) in my turbo! and it is the best mod i have done!

Doesn't it get annoying shifting so often?
I was actually thinking about going taller than the 951 ratios. But now that I think I'll be autox'ing alot, I'll stick with my standard ratio.

I havn't figured out yet, wether taller or shorter gears are better for autox. The acceleration of short gears is a plus, but so is 60+ in 2nd gear.

Dave,

For turbocharge cars, I beleive it would be better to have a shorter ratio.
