Post A/C Lukewarm...switch not clicking?

Its not been a good Porsche week here. Very hot outside and the A/C on 1986 944 Turbo that used to work well now spits out mildly cool air. Its doing something, but not much. The rotary thermostat switch on the dash used to cause a "click" when turned. Now it appears to not effect anything.

Should I suspect the switch (can I bypass)? I've heard horrow stories about a damper, or does it sound like compressor / freon time?

The money is running out.....thanks!

Mark,

Simple check if you are low on freon. On the drivers side near the headlight, you will see part of your AC system. There is a little glass window on one of the lines. Start car, turn on AC, then check the window. If you see bubbles in the freon, time for a recharge.

Question

Two additional questions
1. Since Freon is taboo and R32 (?) is the current coolant, will I have any trouble finding someone to add Freon?
2. Is this a possible, do-it-yourself job or would I need guages, etc.? Seems I remember they used to sell "Freon Top Up Kits" at Pep Boys.
...and Thanks for taking the time to answer! - Mark

Mark,

Freon is still around, but the price fluctuates weekly. I was recently quoted 150.00 for a top-off(I have low freon also). Eventually, if I keep the car, I am going to convert it to the new style. As for DIY kits, I am not sure if these are still available to individuals or not. I DO know that freon can be purchased quite cheaply in Mexico over-the-counter. However, that would be a pretty dumb reason to end up in prison"What are you in for?...I was caught smuggling....FREON".

You can buy freon at most pepboys or other places as long as you are licensed. You can get licensed for $20 www.epatest.com
open book test. answer 21 of 25 questions correct and you can buy freon. Other places to buy www.refrigerantsales.com

Make sure you know what you are doing. I don't but am trying to. I do a lot of my own car work. The DIY conversion kits likje at walmart are ****. You can't mix r134 with r12. It lasts 2-4 months and then the whole system craps out. Big $$$.

You may want to look into using Hc refrigerant.I have had great results using a product called enviro-safe.It is a hydro carbon blend and can be bought online for 7-9 dollars per can.I followed some of the advice on the mobile AC sites and with a combination of enviro safe and propane I am getting 40 degrees at the vents in a 84 16v rabbit and my brother's 87 16v scirocco, my 88 951 is next.I can give more detail if anyone is interested.
