Post Early gauge removal

Anybody got a hint on an easy way to remove the three main gauges from the early 944 dash? I tried removing the whole fascia and it looks like the steering column would have to come out first. How can I pull the gauges from the front without scratching them?

You can push the combo gauge (all the way to the left w/ fuel and coolant temp) out from behind, if you reach it under the dash. Once that's out, and unplugged, you can push the speedo out, then the tach. Disconnect the speedo before pulling too much on it.

PS: IMO, removing the steering wheel is no big deal, and trying to take the gauges out one by one is actually harder. I've found that you can pull the cluster out without removing the wheel if I remember correctly.

Having recently done this I don't see how you could pull them out without removing the steering wheel. Pop the center off of the wheel and then there is a 27/29mm nut in there. Remove that, pull the steering wheel, and remove the top and bottom pieces to the steering column(careful here, old plastic) then you are in buisness. Any questions private message me...

Michael, if I remember correctly, all you have to do is turn the wheel to the left about 50 degrees, and pull the cluster through the bigger openning on the wheel (I've got the 4 spoke), left side of the panel out first.

I see, not sure if that would work for my because I have the 3 spoke and it seems a bit smaller. Sounds like that way may be easier for Devildog..

I'd still recommend taking the wheel off, if you're removing all 3 gauges. As you mention this is old plastic we're dealing with!

Take your time, and good luck.
