Exclamation low oil pressure

The oil pressure in my '83 944 starts at about 4.5 at idol. After warming up is drops to 1.5 and after a long or hard drive it drops to about 1.01. This is only at an idol however when the engine is over 1500 rpm's it is at about 3.4 to 4 when hot. From what I read it seems like it may be the relief valve. Does anybody agree or have a better idea.

I would also appreciate any tips or procedures for replacing the oil pressure relive valve. Thanks for you time.

Joe (and my 944)

It is a little on the low side, but still within spec. Try some thicker oil. I run 20w50 in the summer.

I use Mobil1 15w50 and my oil pressure is always right at 5 when driving and usually doesn't drop past 3.5 when at idle; is my pressure too high?

I guess for now I won't worry about it then. It just scares me a little when I'm at a light and see the gauge so close to 1 bar. Thanks again for the info.

Well, it takes a while for you oil to warm up. A lot longer than it takes for your coolant to. I think when your oil is fully warm, your oil pressure is supposed to be within 1-3 bar. Preferably between 2-3 bar.

I have heard from several people that the bars can coicide with the RPM (in thousands obviously), so 1 bar or so at idle is perfect. Mine idles at about 1.25, tops out around 5 at high RPMs.

You're good to go.

I had an oil change recently, and changed back to a cheap Mahle OEM filter (~$4) from one of the expensive (~$12) K&N oil filters. I immediately noticed a slight pressure drop. Top pressure reads about 4.5 whereas it used to be 5, and now it bottoms out to just under 2 bar, whereas it used to bottom out just above. Grade of oil the same (10W30), but different brand (Kendall instead of Chevron).

So if you're paranoid maybe you should try a K&N oil filter for the next change, and see if it brings it up a bit. 1 bar does sound a bit on the low side. $8 or so might be considered cheap peace of mind...
