Post Need 944 help, please

Ok all you 944 guys, I need some help. I'm thinking about buying a 944, but I don't know too much about them. I am familer with the 911 and 912, but I have only a little info on 944's. So......can you guys help me out with what to look for? I would like one that is in good shape, and has fairly low miles. How reliable are the 944's? I need a car that can be driven everyday. Is this possible with a 944? I'm going to have around $7k. Is this enough, or do I need to come up with more? Im not sure what questions to ask, but which years are better? I know there was a change in '85. Any and all info you guys can help me out with would be great. Thanks alot.

Changes For the NA's:

1984 - Engine management upgrade
1985.5 - Suspension and Engine management upgrades
1987 - Suspension and compression ratio upgrade. ABS and Air Bags become options.

$7,000 should get you a good '87-88 NA. They are as reliable as any 14 year old car.

944 FAQ - There is a "First-Time Buyer Questions" section.

check for timing belt/water pump replacement every 30,000 miles with a retension after around 2k miles on the belt. Clutch goes at around 100k (get a spring center turbo style). Motor mounts at around 150k? CV joints go sometime too. Otherwise, 7000 will DEFINITELY get you a good late model 944 in excellent condition. But then again, it's nice to always have a little left over for the unexpected repairs. Reliability- great! Just keep on the belts and you're set!
