Post 968 trans in 951S

hi I just recently installed a 968 trans in my 89 944 turbo S the trans is a direct bolt in, using a 968 trans mount. but now I ran into a problem my speedometer doesn't work. because the new trans doesn't have the pick up signal point built in. I heard the 968 picks up the signal from the ABS. any ideas how to get my speedometere back to work.
thank you
phil

1. Install the 968 ABS.

or

2. Install an aftermarket speedometer. I don't know of any specifically, but I know they exist.

Phil,

Check the Racing email list archives for a post from Mike Mitchell (mahler9th@aol.com). He has figured out how to do this.

The 968 and 951 ABS are exactly the same. The trick is picking up the wire from the brain that sends the signal to the (different) instrument panel the 968 uses. Like Tom says, check the archives for how Mike did it.

Phillip,

Apart from getting 6 speeds, what are the other benefits that you expect to get from the 968 gearbox ?

Different gear ratios are the major benefit. The overall ratio in 1st is shorter than a turbo but not as short as an S2. The slightly shorter gearing in the lower gears should help bring on boost faster, especially in slower corners in an autox or track event.

Another benefit is the 968 gearbox uses the same differential as the G50 and 993 transmissions. LSDs for these gearboxes are readily available from the factory, Quaife, or Guard Transmission. It's also possible to swap the differential without pulling the trans since it can be removed without moving the pinion out of the way like you have to do with the 944 box.

Cheers,

For an aftermarket speedo you might want to try a SPA unit. SPA makes a really nice digital tach with a speedo built in. They run a little under $400 and can be purchased from Tweeks.
