It must be a euro thing but I never leave manual cars in gear. Neutral with handbrake engaged is the way.

Pat,
I hope you made sure the battery cable isn't burred or close to the other terminal...sounds like that's what caused the problem in the Stephen King thread.
I'll try to sneak a look.
