A few years ago I bought a coolant cap at the auto parts store and I don't know if it is the correct cap. I believe it is a 16 psi cap. My mechanic thinks it could be potentially causing cooling system issue with pressure. Can you get a good cap locally?

this post is based on empirical observation after i sealed my blown headgasket with headgasket sealer at the end of last winter..... my cap was old and crappy and coolant seemed to be working it's way out. but i didn't see any foul oil or cloudy exhaust....
so, one day while on a trip (after about 600 miles), i asked a guy at the desk at an O'Reilly's in eastern Ohio about getting a new cap... if the old crappy one might be leaking. and this guy looks at it and says, 'i bet your repaired headgasket is fine.... you're not running enough pressure. that's why every few hundred miles, you're noticing the level in your overflow tank going down.... it's evaporating out because you need more pressure.....'
he was right. soon as i put the new cap on, no more evaporation. my 968 didn't have a problem maintaining temperature, but it's able to hold pure water for much longer duration with a good amount of pressure buildup (maybe 15 psi ?).... holding good pressure also increases the temperature that your coolant evaporates out. not boiling out. but, simplyevaporating out (whether it be pure water or 50/50).... maintaining good temperature has been a breeze ever since. that was before it got cold and i changed over to 50/50. which i'm running now with no issues.
