968 clutch does not fully disengage
Recently bought a 1992 968 coupe after owning a 1991 S2 Cab and 1992 968 Cab many years ago. Here is the problem...
Occasionally, my clutch will not fully disengage in 1st or 2nd gear. Have to pull or push the shifter with force to get them out. This morning, after sitting for an hour in stop-go freeway traffic due to an accident , I finally figured out how to reproduce it.
While the car is sitting on a slight slope (facing upward), let the clutch pedal out slowly with little gas. Once the cluth padel is fully out, let go the gas pedal to allow the car to roll by itself. The car will still move uphill even if I fully depress the clutch pedal. I can get the shifter out of 1st gear, but it needs some force, no grinding sound though. If I do the same on a flat road or downhill, shifting out of 1st gear is super smooth.
Any suggestion? The car has 108K miles, with no history on the clutch. PO said the clutch master or slave cylinder has been recently replaced. Will trapped air in the hydraulic system cause the problem, but only when the car climbs a hill?
Another thing might or might not be related to this is that the car sometimes goes into reverse when I put it to 1st. It happened only a couple of times in heavy congested traffic. Fundling the shifter to 2nd or all the way to the right seems to fix the problem. Has anyone seen this?
Many thanks!
George

The car does have a momo short throw shifter. The aftermarket shifter could have caused the 1st and reverse mixup, but I can not think of why it has anything to do with clutch not disengaging.
I will open it up tonight to see if there is anything loose.
Thanks!
