Default Strut Insert Issue

Changing the front strut insert. The struts have the threaded cap so I assuem they are replaceable. Caps off but the insert is stuck inside. Is there atrick or are these not rebuildable?

I assume you have an early car 83/85.5 all you need is the inserts.Probably the old one are Sachs-Boge they are available from www.Pelicanparts.com or you could talk to the guys over at www.paragon-products.com.Yours will be in the left hand side diagram #4 insert.

I'm assuming this is the stock strut off your 85 944 which would indeed be a rebuildable strut. Unless something weird has been done, it should just pull out. All else fails and the insert just wont budge, you can drill a hole in the bottom of the strut housing and use a drift to coax the insert into moving.

Thanks. They are rebuildable and I was able to get one out putting the top bolt and plate on it and "pulling" agaist it to pop the insert out. The second one will not budge even after heat and BP Blaster for a few days.

It's possible over the years moisture may have caused a little rust in there so shock & strut housing could be lightly stuck together ...you might try taping up/down/around outside of the casing with a rubber mallet to loosen the bond ...be careful though to not strike too hard or you will dent the casing and make matters worse.
