Default Need some help! 1986 951

Hey everybody, I have an 86 951 in Guards Red. It is my first car and I have a few questions. If you could help it would be greatly appreciated.

1. I want to change my wheels to something with a more "flush" look. I was wondering what you would reccomend, size, offset, suspension mods. I am also wondering if my car has late or early offset. My car does not have abs as it is an 86.

2. I was considering upgrading to Lindsey racing 55 lbs injectors, a new air filter, and Lindsey racing 951 chips. What will it do to my Fuel consumption on 93 octane Shell V-Power pump gas.

3. I just moved to Hernando County, Florida. I was wondering what is the best oil, weight, and viscosity for my climate. I do daily this car less than 15 miles a day.

ANY HELP AT ALL WILL GREATLY BE APPRECIATED THANK YOU!

Hi and welcome, good to see fellow Floridians on here.

Your car is early offset. What wheels do you currently have on the car? If you have the stock wheels they should sit fairly flush, but if you have the later (late offset) wheels they will sit further in the fenders if the correct spacers were not fitted. Easy to correct though. Post a picture so we can see what you have.

As for oil, I've always used Brad Penn 20w-50 year round here in FL without issue. Use the genuine factory Porsche oil filter from a dealer.

As for mods to your 951, basically comes down to what you want from the car. There are tons of options out there, I would speak to Mike Lindsey and tell him what you want to achieve before you start swapping out parts.

I'm sure more expert opinions will follow, but,

1. You can run any wheels with "early offset", pre 1987. (Shameless plug - I have a set of Mille Miglia Porsche CupII copies with Bridgestone tires for sale CHEAP in your offset).

2.I have a couple more mods than that (but stock injectors) and I find gas mileage to be around 22mpg at best, but this is largely due to the fact that I can't keep my foot out of it and constantly have the turbo huffing.

3. 20w50, your brand choice, etc. Do a search for this and you will be overwhelmed, oil seems to be a very personal and passionate subject, but the car should have 20w50.

Good luck, and welcome!

Jeff

I curently have 15 inch Phonedials with Pirelli P6 Radials 215/60,vr15 all around. As you can see in my picture the rear wheels are set approimately 2 inches into the body. Id like to do 17 inch twists with a low profile tire and still fill my wheel well gaps

those are not turbo phonedials.. get some 86 turbo stock 16" phone dials or even fuchs to get a better look. injectors are a waste of time unless you are upgrading the turbo.. pm me anytime

Yep, you have na 15" and you need the 16" turbo phonedials to fill that fender.

If you are looking at other wheels in 17" you will be looking at factory late offset or aftermarket. The twists will fit but all the 17" wheels will require spacers on your car as they never made a 17" in early offset, not a big issue.

Recomended tires for your 17" are F 225 45 17 R
255 40 17

All the factory wheels and some good aftermarket are here: http://www.wheelenhancement.com/index.php?t=Wheels

There are a few recommended suspension mods you will need to run 17" wheels. Here are some factory bulletins about running 17" wheels:

What if I were to Roll my fender wells, Do those exact wheels and tires and the 17 in spacer and I did Koni Coilovers? Would that solve my problem?

No need to roll your fenders or fit coilovers to fit 17" wheels in the factory recommended tire sizes I listed. You just need spacers.

Here is one of mine, an early offset 86 with 17" wheels, they fit just fine and fill out the fenders:
