Default Autowatch immobiliser problem

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this question, but as my fellow 944/951 owners are clearly a waaay-clever-than-average bunch it's a good start...

So my immobiliser, from Autowatch (a 239Ti I think), fitted a few years ago is playing up in an intermittent way. Occasionally when I turn off the engine, it seems to kick in and shut everything down - no central locking, nothing (which I assume is what it's supposed to do when tripped). After a delay of between a few seconds and a few hours, it just comes back to life.

When the problem first appeared, I found that disconnecting the battery and then reconnecting after a few seconds seemed to fix the problem, though that could just be coincidence, as it doesn't seem to help now - the problem is occurring more often, and the shut-down seems to last longer.

Can anyone suggest a good way to troubleshoot this? Apart from taking it to a qualified technician, of course, which is the sensible option that I'm trying to avoid.
