Like others have said, there is no responsibility on your part. If it'll help you sleep better there is nothing wrong with helping the guy tear things down for an inspection (assuming that won't somehow imply that you are legally responsible). And yeah, it does sound like it may have been a siezed up water pump rather than something you did.

It sucks and I know how you feel. But then, whenever I host a wrenching party I always say that the work is warranteed until the end of my driveway.
