944 engine compatability
I'm trying to locate a replacement (Used)long block for my 87 944. Does anyone know of a website that will allow mw to post he replacement engine serial # to see if it is compatable with the existing stock configuration?
My timing belt broke, and I'm assuming that the head/piston(s) are trashed, and I figured it would be easier to drop in another motor for the time being, while I rebuild the original motor.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

If your timing belt broke, you likely have a couple bent valve. I would just consider pulling the head and have it redone. Unless you have other underlying issues, it doesn't make sense to pull the entire motor.
If you need a replacement head, that is also a lot cheaper and easier.

ok, good advice, how likely is it that the pistons have not been damaged? if it is highly unlikelly that they are NOT toast, i would rather rebuild the head. Way easier. Can the bent valves just be replaced and reseated, of will the head need machining. Should I buy an inspection probe thing to look inside?
The failure was either during start-up or shutdown, not sure. When i went to start, no compression, then i concluded that the distributor was not spining.
Cheers

Pistons are not likely to be damaged at low RPMs. They might have some light marks on them, but it won't hurt. Just replace the valves. Depending on the age and condition of the head, you might want do other things while you're in there.

Fair enough, original motor has 130k, body is very good, this is/was my summer day driver and it has been sitting in the garage for too long, 2 years now while other projects got resolved. I guess seals, and bent pistons would be about all i would do. Engine ran strong little smoke on start up, so I will probably pull the head, and make an assesment then.
Thanks again!

I have a head with 110k on it (but was rebuilt at some point in it's life I was told), with a burned exhaust valve. No timing belt failure, just one bad exhaust valve (so it wasn't traumatic). Head is level, etc, removed from my running vehicle.
