Bizarre problem - DME fried?
Paulyy: No chance on getting water in the DME.
Ben951S/OntarioTurbo: The fuel smell was present due to the injectors randomly firing/ticking after attempting to start the car/turning (with key still in the ON position), as the pressure was still present in the fuel lines. Good call on the question(s).
szabon: Working on finding a DME/KLR set for testing purposes.
I am definitely going back to basic troubleshooting and refraining from introducing any variables. I was just hoping for a slew of "Oh yeah, it's <insert scenario/fix here>; we've seen that hundreds of times" responses.

I am documenting the process and will share all results soon. It may have to wait until Friday as my schedule is full and I have limited time to test/troubleshoot.
Thank you all again for the replies - good bunch of folks here.
P.S. As a side note: It's important to mention here that John Vitesse is taking a short vacation (he deserves one), so rather than pester him I thought I would bring this to the group here. His patience and technical support is un-freaking-believable. So much to the point that one feels guilty for relying on him.
What about the alarm? I also experienced this one and had to jumper the alarm box as per Clarks instructions. I was not getting tach bounce then either.
Good news: The chip socket on the DME had multiple cold solder joints - easily fixed!
Bad news: This resulted in damaging the Vitesse DME Chipboard and a few small components on the board.

After soldering the joints on the DME, repairing a few components, and re-installing the stock chip, the car started but ran like hell (big injectors, etc) above idle. I'm working with John Vitesse on the chipboard. Nothing like frying a pristine piece of equipment...
My suggestion to anyone that wants to replace their DME and/or KLR chip is to perform some preventative maintenance on those units.
Thanks so much to everyone that offered suggestions! This actually gave me chances to perform some preventative maintenance "while I was there".
