Default Gear carrier work. Is special tool 9178 a necessity?

I'm splitting my transmission case to reseal it. I've read through the manual and it mentions a special tool 9178 which is supposed to slide onto the splined input shaft. Is this to protect the shaft or the seals, or perhaps something else?

Can the work be safely done without it?
