nope, as far as efficiency goes it makes no difference.

i have a 924 turbo, the turbo is under the exhaust mani, everytime i work on it i curse porsche why didnt they do the 924 turbo as the 944 turbo....would have made it much easyer to work on the turbo, upgrade/service the turbo..etc.

on a side note: damn thats a tiny compressor side on that callaway setup

Does anyone know what turbo that Callaway used? I have looked at doing a conversion modeled after the Callaway setup and one of the big problems is that most modern turbos are to large size wise to fit in at that location. This is due most often to them having a built in wastegate.

Confused, please explain why. I always though it gives faster spool in that position.

This is a case of "by the numbers" it will be more efficient closer to the manifold. Then there is realty and for 95 percent of us the difference will not really be noticed. Furthermore with proper sizing of the hot side the difference will lessened even more.

It is a case where although technically it is correct in saying that having the turbo closer to the manifold is better it really does not matter until you are reaching for those final last little bit of HP and throttle response that it starts to make a real difference.

With proper engineering they are making rear mounted turbo setups now that work very well. I actually design done for our cars using an off the shelf from a Mazda 3 2.2l turbo motor. The hot side sizing combined with it being for a 2.2l make it virtually the perfect turbo for a rear mounted setup in out cars. Will at be as good as a Callaway or a 951. Absolutely not but it sure would bring me miles of smiles. And it really is a cheep conversion. For less than $1000 you can easliy do it if you shop carfully.

Lot more room for one thing. After I removed the airbox from my n/a I was blown away by how much free space there was. And then people say there was a heat issue...
