Default Trans output seals - replaced now leaking a week later

Hey everyone, I just need to vent...I replaced the output seals in my wife's 968, and it was bone dry for a week...and tonight I can see it's leaking from the DS output seal area...looks like I have to pull the trans and try this again! Grrr...

I don't know how you installed the new seals or whether you inspected the shaft where the seal fits but you have to: ensure the shaft is smooth, new seal is installed squarely and just below flush with outer edge of journal, lube the inside of the seal and the shaft before reinstalling the shaft and make sure the splines don't nick the new seal. You shouldn't have to pull the trans to do this, just the CV axels, and drain some or all of the fluid first. I recommend replacing with Redline MT-90 if you don't already have it in there. Just my opinion, but it's been a smoother operation for me when I changed to it from whatever the PO had in there before. Good luck, Stephen.

Thanks! I have actually done this job twice, once with the trans in the car, the other with it out...it was sooo much easier with it out of the car. I could have sworn everything was even, and clean, but according to my driveway, it wasn't! Thank you for the support, and I'll report back once the third seal is in there and (knock on wood) hopefully holding tight.

Have you checked the play in the shaft? In-out is OK, if there is radial/lateral movie then the diff output bearings may be shot.

If you search I did a DIY for this sometime ago.

Eric, I actually used your DIY to do it the first time! I'm going to double check for the play in the shaft, thank you for the idea!

I was able to R and R the DS seal (the one that was leaking) without dropping the trans - drove it around the block, and no leaks...but the last one didn't leak for a week, then exploded, so I guess only time will tell. Thanks all for the help!

How was the shaft? Any movement or any wear marks?

No movement at all, there were 2 grooves on the larger part of the shaft that were visable, but unable to be felt...I don't know if that has something to do with it. If it leaks again, I'll take the shaft and the whole side plate to a axle shop and see if they can tell something I can't.
