Default What to use to lube front engine seals?

Sometime in the near future I'll be replacing my front engine seals. I've got the timing belts, rollers, sprockets, etc. removed, and I'm just waiting for the parts to arrive.

What should I use to lubricate the new seals? Clark's Garage refers to bearing grease. Can I just use motor oil? Does it make much difference? Also, do all of the various seals, O-rings, mylar gaskets, etc. get the same treatment?

Cheers,

Mark

Hey, Mark! Yes that garage gave you accurate info... It is best to use thick bearing grease to lube all different kinds of seals relating to induction and oil seals. Cam tower gaskets, intake gaskets, seals, valve cover gaskets ect.

I did all my seals with motor oil and have used that method for years. No problem with resealing my '87 and I did all of them including the front and rear main crankshaft seals.

I have seen guys use oil, wheel bearing grease, white lithium grease, vaseline ...
As long as you are creating a nice slippery surface to press the seal in you are good to go.

The only one I've never lubricated is the Mylar seal.

Lubing the inner surface is important so the seal does not wear a lot before enough oil migrates into the sealing area. Maybe this is what you meant but I felt it is worth noting. I use wheel bearing grease.

Sylglide , best for seals, petroleum products like oil and vasoline will actually attack the seals. Sylglide is industry standard
