Default Early Odometer Sliding Shaft Fix

'83 944

So a few weeks ago I opened up my odometer and found the classic gear loose on shaft problem. I fixed it as per Clark's and it lasted about 50 miles. I figured the glue wasn't strong enough and opened it up again. This time I found the gear was still well attached but now I had the sliding shaft issue.

After quite a bit of research, the only fix I could find was to "be creative". There may be something better out there, but here's what I did.

The first picture shows the completed fix. In front of the odometer is a plastic template I made from a 1 gallon jug. I then cut up an aluminum can, folded it over a few times so it was thicker and stronger, then cut it to the same shape as the template. I then slid the aluminum behind the shaft and wrapped the ends around the plastic face plate stand. If the shaft tries to back out it will now be stopped by the aluminum.

It's not pretty, but it seems very solid. Also, if there's something better out there I can just take it out. It's very firm but neither screwed in or glued. We'll see how long it lasts. -Brian

I had the same problem with mine. I made a spacer to go between gear and the odometer frame to take space out.

Necessity is the Mother of Invention. Whatever works, DO IT.

I just super-glued mine on. And then added a ridge of glue on either side of the gear so it can't move. It has been working for over a year now.

It wasn't the gear moving, the whole shaft moved on mine.
