Default 90 944S2 Fuel gauge question

My fuel gauge only registers 3/4 full when I fill it up all the way. Does anyone know of an existing problem with this? Would the problem be in the cluster or sending unit? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks fellow RListers.

No idea but I have the same problem I just ignore it.

Considering you own a 944 and you're worrying about something that simple, you must be lucky!

My 944 does the same thing. I've always wondering how to get it working right, but don't really worry about it.

Mine's more like 1/2 reading when full. Shows empty when I'm still half full. That's why I just wait for the warning light or 300 miles, whichever comes first

In all of these cases it's likely that the fuel level sender is clogged and therefore isn't moving properly to indicate fuel level. I had the same problem after I parked my 951 for a little under 2 years. Gas that starts at 93 octane is about 50 octane and full of nasty after 2 years.

mine only went to 3/4, but it stayed there for days before dropping.

might just be the register on the pump, might be a little gummed up after 20+yrs of use. as long as it still works, i wouldn't be worried about it.

These level senders are easy to repair, pull them from top of tank. Unscrew the lower cover ( small nut on center) and you can get at the float there are two wiper contacts that touch two strung wires that change the resistance as the float rises. ( same / similar to most like in a 911) There is a sort of reservoir in its base ( the cap that you rempoved) and the thin wall tube with slot to let fuel at the float that isolates the float from fuel sloshing around also can trap trash old gas tar looking crap etc. Clean the contacts and make sure when you tip it, right side up & up side down, it slides easily on its main guide rod. if you have a multi-meter you can do a resistance check as the float moves. Tip it horizontal or at a slight angle to move it along its travel.

I am going to try pulling out the sending unit to clean it. I have resolved all the issues in the car except this and the A/C. It will not recharge for some reason. Compressor was bad so I replaced that but for some reason it will not suck in the freeze 12. I was told to try replacing the expansion valve and try again. I didn't mean to go off the subject but I was trying to answer everyone who said to not worry about it.
