Default Help- Swapped Trailing Arms, how about e brake cable?

Hi everyone,

I swapped my rear trailing arms on my 83 from steel to aluminum, now the parking brake cable doesn't fit into the trailing arm hubs.

For those of you that have done this, what did you do about the parking brake?

Has anyone swapped the cable from the parking brake handle back? Or has anyone adapted an early cable setup to a 86?

Does anyone have an 86 cable set for sale?

Thanks in advance,
Alex

I will get a new cable.

Does anyone know how hard it is to install one of these up to the handle in the cockpit? Are there directions/drawings anywhere? I already know its a total PITA to install them into the hubs.

If you mean connecting the handle to the cable that's easy as pie... I just swapped over my 83's handle to a late style handle. Completely self explanatory... 2 bolts holding the handle to the side. One hook to hook on the cable...

Aluminum arm with hub weighs a touch over 20 pounds.

On topic: The later cable, handle and adjusting bracket are needed for the early car. They are also routed differently and attached to the tt carrier in a different way. There was a tech bulletin about it somewhere.

I've had it all off my late car and didn't remember fitting it back being a pain at all.

I installed '86 aluminum trailing arms on my '84 recently. I did not have to change the parking brake cable that goes into the cabin. For the shorter cable that goes from the left wheel to the center, I used the '86 cable. For the long cable that goes from the right wheel to the handle, I left the car's own ('84) cable in there. I had to readjust everything but it wasn't too bad.

When i did the swap I weighed the components- steel trailing arms weigh 32lb 3.5oz, the aluminum ones weigh 23lb 1oz.

Do you guys have any tricks to reinstall the cable end into the hub and get the pin+clip on correctly? It was a major pain to get it out..

That's probably a 5lb saving in unsprung weight on each axle, nice!

If you loosen all the adjustment out of the cable at the handle and adjusting beam at the rear then wind in the adjusting nut at each brake, it gives you more jiggle room and make it easier to fit. It's easier to get back on than take them off especially with the hubs in place. GL

Thanks.

Yep, overall I saved 21.75lbs by swapping to rear coilovers + tbar delete.
