weird new engine noise
So, this just started today. After I drove the car (86 951) for a bit (like 30 minutes) and just a couple of full boost accelerations, but overall nice driving, I heard this weird wirring/grinding sound only below 2000 rpm. It is loudest at around 1500 rpm. It sounds kind of like a bad bearing or something. I took a video:

Its hard to hear, but you can hear it if you listen hard. I think it is around the turbo, but I haven't done a stethescope or anything yet. I let the car sit and cool off. When I turned it on it was fine. No sound. Then after about 20 minutes it came back. It took that long though....
Any ideas?

Ya man, it's kinda hard to determine what sound it is you are speaking of in the video. The whine of the motor and the air being sucked into the intake when revving it up makes it kinda hard to hear, but I think I hear what sound you are speaking of, and I honestly dont have an idea of what it is. Maybe your guess is as good as anyone else's, and that it is turbo bearings :-/

its got 200k miles on it... should I even bother rebuilding it or just get a new one? I don't know what turbo I am eventually going to go with, and everything is pretty much stock for now, so I am hesitant to buy a new turbo now, but I don't want to be dumb...

200K is a lot of miles for a turbo. It's time to rebuild the turbo or get a new one. It's really up to you. I'm sure some of the turbo owners on here will have a better take on that :-)
