Sylvania 194 bulb for dash??
I was in the process of fixing my odometer gear when I decided to tackle my dim dash light problem. I followed the write up on Clark's Garage and tinfoiled the reflector things and went out to get the recommended Sylvania 194 bulbs. Now the website says they are 3.8w but the package says 4.6w?? Did I miss something? Has anyone used these?

Ok... found my answer. Apparantly, Sylvania thought it would be a good idea to boost the amps on its 194 long life bulb. Amps on the 194 is 0.27 but its 0.33 on the long life version and thus the wattage increase.... bastards. So in short, DO NOT use the 194 LL, it is not the same!

See Clark's Garage here (chart at very bottom of page):

The 158 is the "correct" OE replacement w/ 3.3 watts. The REGULAR 194 w/ 3.78 watts is a recommended upgrade that won't melt the bulb holders. If the Long Life/LL 194 goes as high as you say it may be too much/cause a problem
I have the same issue on a late car, I am going to be doing all the bulbs and the reflector housings. Be smart and buy either of the correct bulbs listed above and you will be fine.

I changed mine out per the Clark's recommendation with the 194 bulbs and the aluminum foil. Works great, even my 42 year old eyes can see the gauges no problem. I used the wife's toe nail polish remover to clean the old stuff off the housing IIRC. A good one evening project.
