This is weird...I was in first gear, just after reversing out of a driveway, and after a few yards I heard a horrific bang, like I had driven over something metal that bounced up and hit the underneath of the car. It was loud. The car jumped out of first and into neutral. I got out and looked around - there was nothing on the road where I had been driving. Looked underneath the car - couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. The engine was still running fine. I got back in and tried putting it into gear again...no problem. I drove off carefully, and the car seemed fine. I ended up driving home (35 miles or so) with zero issues.
Anyone know what might have happened? It's freaking me out man.
The car is an '89 951.

You probably didn't engage first gear properly. It hapened to me once and just like you say it popped out with a big bang.It wont cause any damage, dont worry.

I'm going to go with it sitting on the synchro only, not in gear properly as well.
It's pretty freaky when it happens. It's happened on one of my non-944 cars in the past as well.
