The Rotor, Cracked

1 Attachment(s)
Is this bad? Car is a 1986 NA. Left front.
Attachment 1367442

Will this rotor still give me thousands of miles of service or should I schedule replacement? I've never had this happen before.

run it till you can't stop any more

944V8inDFW 03-13-2012 04:36 AM

Seriously, if you have to ask if it is ok to run 1000's of miles it altreay too late

Paulyy 03-13-2012 05:37 AM

i'd replace that.

put it this way. when it breaks, you'll have 3 rotors left. when you'll need to stop, you'll notice the brake pedel is soft and you won't stop until you pump it which you'll be scared to let go of the brakes.

Would you jump out of an airplane with a big tear in your parachute?

garage1 03-13-2012 08:19 AM

what could possibly go wrong?

odurandina 03-13-2012 08:50 AM

at some point, you will, experience complete wheel lockup and possibly crash.

were such a brake failure occur in the rear at a speed over 25~30 mph, it's highly likely your car will go into a spin.

you should drive the car about 15 mph with your hazzard lights on to the nearest brake shop.

btw, i have a set of 968 front brake rotors at spec worn about 40% of the way through w/ no rust... if anyone is interested.

25 bucks plus shipping.

Reminds me of this,, dude drops his car off at my shop for a ALT light on, never mentioned anything about ZERO brakes

Can you confirm what brand that rotor is? I wonder if it is from some crappy company like URO PARTS.

looking at the rust and wear patterns, I'm wagering it's more an issue with age than the company that made the rotor....

mazdaverx7 03-13-2012 12:52 PM

yes it's bad. replace the pads and rotors.
