I put 6.5 Polk/Momo's in my 86. I used the OE panels and punched pattern. It is possible some of the clarity was compromised but not that I could tell. They sounded so much better than the high quality 4x6 Clarions I had, there was no comparison, especially when amped. I didn't want anything like after market grilles that said 'steal me' when looking in the windows. I would say the stealth look worked out better for me as I had some expensive components installed and never got broken into.

Installed speakers and amps

Factory 10-speaker system used a 6.25" speaker with a square mounting frame made by Nokia. The OE woofer is still available, as are the OE grills. If you buy the OE grill, it will come with a tweeter already mounted to it.

A 6x9 was never used in these cars from the factory. You can get a 6.5" speaker to fit in the factory location, but new mounting holes will need to be drilled and the mounting flange on the speaker will probably have to be modified.

I have a set of modified German-built MB Quarts that will fit. I also have a set of 6x9 and 6x8 German-built MB Quarts that I couldn't get to fit without custom mounting plates.

I had to trim one edge of the mounting flange so it would fit flush against the body of the car. On the MB Quarts, it's a plastic extension of the basket, so it's easily done. Other speakers may not have to be trimmed at all. New mounting holes in the car had to be drilled since the speakers are larger in diameter than the factory speakers.
