That was a good engine, originally designed and built by Opel engineers in Germany. I think it was fitted in the Opel GT way back in the 70's. Yes GM owns Opel, but I wouldn't call that innovation anywhere close to what GM can produce here in the USA.

Either way, GM ok'd and paid for the development of both motors, it doesn't really matter who made them. What matters is who gets to stick them in their car. |
ok like i said again i don't want to swap any king of v8. YA the 944 motor makes 60hp/liter and that is why im taking it out .... i like the Audi 20v small light lots of available parts and it will make 600 whp no problem its bin done many times. also it bolts up to the factory bell housing(924). and as to the gm swap YA they are cheep and make ok hp and torque. but there are a million better motors out there. and as to all the people saying i cant do this with an na 944, have you people ever built a car? you say i cant do this or that and its really just not that hard. the 83 is nice in Ct no emissions no inspection and it had a simple electrical system witch also makes the swap easier. and any thing that is better about the turbo car will bolt right on my car. so why hack up a nice rare turbo 944 i have my car it was cheep and i m going to build it.o ya the pics of the 2 cars i put up that i built. one was a 89 turbo 325is mabe 500 whp 460 ft/lb. the other was a turbo 16v rocco making 350 whp 330 ft/lb, those cars where daily driven

I don't understand why the hp/L number means anything... Wouldn't power/weight ratio be the only thing that matters? Somebody educate my young mind :p

No self respecting car guy would ever use HP/L in a turbo application. |
One of the highest torque/liter NA four cylinders Porsche motor is the 3.0 lrt 968, 75 lb-ft of torque per liter,& lol this is a motor which is twenty year old.As low as 1000 RPM it produce 147 lb-ft of torque & at 2000 RPM it's already pumping out 191 lb-ft .And has a torque plot that is nearly flat rigth up to the 6,500 RPM red line.So wonder how all those motors you guys mention (SRX -S2000 ect ect) will fare up against a Porsche 4 cyl if the ever decide to produce another one today. Four cyl 400 HP + is nothing new to Porsche remember this fellaw.

My friend Antti (owner of 9Products) will offer in near future a kit which allows to bolt on directly Audi 5-cylinder to 944 torquetube. Here's a bell housing proto (new cast) attached to Audi block. This time it still have a adapter between the block & bell housing, but second proto will have spacer section in cast as well.

I have both a 928S4 and a 951. *It's hard to tell just looking at pictures but the 928 really is a much bigger car in every way.*
Much wider! Without measuring it, I would be the interior is 8"+ wider at the seats. *Unless you are a very tiny person, even cutting down the 928 dash would leave almost zero room for a driver in a 944 chassis.* The 928 transmissions are a totally different design than the 944/951/968 set up. The 951 is a transaxle while the 928 is a transmission bolted up to an axle assembly. Making it a much longer set up. Ever wonder why the 928 has that huge hump right behind the driver, between the rear passenger seats? Fwiw, the auto is considered to be the beefier trains in the 928. The stick is RARE!! Even if you cut out the spare tire well in the 944 the length is probably too short and then your axle shafts would be coming from near the bummer area, instead of 2.5' forward of that like the 944 set up.* The 944 gear box is basically an Audi unit anyway. With a little fab work you could probably fit a newer Audi 6 speed in there.* Not a great shot of it. But you can kinda start to see where the 928 is. Bigger than the 951. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7142/6...f2c4f6_b_d.jpg |

The Audi motor and the Porsche motor are similar displacements, both boosted, same vintage tech. So.......? |

I guess I don't understand the point. He is shooting for 400hp. That is pretty simple to get out of a 944 Turbo with the same level of reliability and without all the fab work.

The audi 5cyl is far more capable and reliable motor at that hp level. The turbo 944 needs more attention at that power level.

I've spent significant time aroun both. At that power level they are about the same. Certainly not enough difference to justify all the custom fit parts of that swap. The swap itself will create more reliability issues than anything.
