Caveat emptor (buyer beware). That really holds true on these cars 83 or 90, doesn't matter. It's so hard to get the real story on maintenance history, how the car was treated and CARFAX is simply a joke, so don't let your purchase ride on that. Get as much info as you can and then roll the dice. I've had 3 and each one was a maintenance hog. Now, in retrospect, I see that I should have simply accepted the fact that they require frequent attention. It's ok since I enjoy getting my hands dirty and fixing the things that either break or need periodic replacement.

I'm biased, but the cool thing about the early models is that the older interior style has actually rotated back into style. If you look at new cars, most of them have separate gauge pods like the early cars. I also think it's more race-styled. Not to mention the super awesome airplane styled tachometer.

One thing when comparing early vs late curb weights: remember that the late models have a larger fuel tank, so subtract 24 pounds from the late model curb weight. (early cars have 17 gallon tanks, late cars have 21 gallon tanks)

Here is what you can do to an early interior to perk it up.

Most people prefer the late dash, but for most of the nine years I've owned my 86, I've had early car envy. The early cars are quirky, unique, and deliver an experience the 85.5 cars can't touch. They scream retro, 1970s, and German sports car. Very cool, but only if they've been well kept. I still enjoy my 86, but the late dash feels like you're driving any other car; generic and dull. I also agree that an 83 feels much more brisk.

That is the sexist interior I have ever seen. That color would camouflage my dog's hair better too....
