Default VDO water temperature gauge sender

I'm not feeling the love for the in dash water temp gauge. Mine seems to read high and I would rather not send it off for recalibration. From some searching it seems the factory temp sender might be a standard VDO 10-180 ohm sender. Can anyone confirm if this is the case?

I was planning on fitting a VDO gauge and just wiring it to the factory sender. Would probably keep the in dash gauge connected to the same sender also. Anyone done this? Probably looking at a gauge like this.
